The Association

The Chinese Studies Association of Australia [CSAA] is the professional association for China specialists and post-graduate students in Australia (incorporated under the ACT Associations Incorporations Act 1991). Its membership includes most of the specialists in the fields of anthropology, economics, geography, history, language, law, linguistics, political science, sociology, literature and other aspects of Chinese society and culture.

The CSAA convenes a major biennial conference, containing dozens of panels of papers and drawing a large number of participants both from Australia and abroad. The most recent national conference was hosted by the University of Sydney from 7th to 9th December 2023. The coming conference is scheduled to be hosted by the Centre for Contemporary Chinese Studies at the University of Melbourne in December 2025.

The CSAA liaises with government departments and other appropriate official bodies at Commonwealth and State levels regarding the teaching of the Chinese language and culture in primary and secondary schools and universities and other issues relevant to the field of Chinese Studies, such as research funding. The Association works to ensure that it has a significant input on all important matters relating to Chinese Studies in Australia.
