There is already a discussion underway about the ‘idea of woman’ in nationalism in India in the anti-colonial movement, before Independence in 1947, as there is in relation to nationalism in China, Australia and in Europe. While we hope to continue that discussion, we are also hoping to explore further:
- Firstly we are interested in the views expressed by women’s movements on this issue during anti-colonial campaigns.
- Secondly we hope to look beyond the campaigns for ‘independence’ to consider how women reacted to the gendered realities of national independence once it had been achieved in India, China and (indifferent ways) Australia.
- Thirdly, we hope to look further than the Very limited confines of the ‘nation’ to consider the desire to interact beyond national borders and national identities.
