Co-presented by the China Studies Centre and Macleay Museum, this event is part of the 2015 Sydney Chinese New Year Festival.
Directly taught and influenced by Shanxi folk artists in the 1980s, multimedia artist Dr Tianli Zu renews the Chinese traditional craft of paper cutting in her contemporary art making practice.
Zu will share her experiences of cutting, the stories embedded in the papercuts and the meanings that underpin the patterns and motifs. Through an exploration of the art and creation of papercuts, Zu takes us on a journey exploring metaphors, living expressions, knowledge, power and virtue, the environment, and beyond. Papercuts are a visual poetry that helps us recognise the interconnection between self and the universe and obtain mutual respect.
Australian multimedia artist Dr Tianli Zu, was born in Beijing, China. Her practice integrates the handmade and technology. Through an interdisciplinary process of intuitive hand cut, animation and cinematic projection, Zu employs art to engage and comment on complex social phenomena, culturally, philosophically and psychologically.
