During the past decade, China experienced profound economic and social changes. Under the leadership of Hu Jintao and Wen Jiabao, the country became richer, more powerful, more globally prominent, and more vexed. Despite many significant advances, China is now a carnival of complexities and contradictions, social confusions and political contentions. What can we make of the past decade, and how is the society and policy of China in 2014 best understood, especially as it grapples with fresh challenges and searches for a new global identity?
Professor Kerry Brown will outline the main findings of his just-published book Carnival China, followed by a discussion with Professor John Keane of Sydney Democracy Network. The audience is invited to ask questions.
Professor Kerry Brown is Professor of Chinese Politics and Director of the China Studies Centre at the University of Sydney. He leads the Europe China Research and Advice Network, funded by the European Union, and is an Associate Fellow of the Asia Programme at Chatham House, London.
