The publication this March of the Tang through Ming volume completes the four-volume Biographical Dictionary of Chinese Women. Covering some 3,600 years, from 1600 BCE to 2000, the Dictionary offers information on more than 1,000 women from all walks of life, many previously unknown to mainstream history.

This monumental work was conceived over thirty years ago, work began on it over twenty years ago and the first volume was published seventeen years ago, in 1998. Editor-in-Chief Dr Lily Xiao Hong Lee contacted scholars from around the world to write the biographies. She and her co-editor-in-chief Dr A D Stefanowska, aided by Dr Sue Wiles, produced the first three volumes in under ten years. The fourth and final volume is dedicated to the memory of Dr Stefanowska, who died in 2008.
Copies of all four volumes of the Dictionary will be available for inspection at the launch of Willow Catkins: Festschrift for Dr Lily Xiao Hong Lee on the Occasion of Her 75th Birthday, to be held on 12 June at the University. Published by The Oriental Society of Australia and printed by Sydney University Press, this festschrift will be launched by Dr Louise Edwards in the Law Lounge, Sydney Law School, 6 pm-8:30 pm.
