How should we compare Chinese and Western medicine? After briefly pointing out the inadequacies of current popular characterizations of the differences between them (e.g., holistic vs reductionist, physiological vs. anatomical, etc.), I shall propose some fresh approaches to their relationship that are at once more historically grounded and more philosophically productive.

Shigehisa Kuriyama is Reischauer Institute Professor of Cultural History at Harvard University. His prize-winning study of Greek and Chinese conceptions of the body, The expressiveness of the body and the divergence of Greek and Chinese medicine (ZONE Books), has been translated into Chinese, Greek, Korean, and Spanish.
