Call for papers
On February 1-2, 2017, the Australian Centre on China in the World will hold a doctoral workshop titled “Korea University and Australian National University: Sinological Exchange.” Primarily intended to assist students and faculty in international exchange, presentation, and research, this workshop will be co-hosted and largely funded by Korea University’s Department of Chinese and Japanese Language and Literature through the Korean government’s “Brain Korea” programme.
Taking into consideration the need for a holistic approach to the study of China, this workshop will accept presentations by doctoral students on any field related to the broader field of Sinology, including but not limited to language, literature, history, political science, and economics. Comparative and transnational approaches are very welcome, particularly presentations that discuss both China and Korea.
15 to 20 minute presentations will all be held on February 2 in concurrent panels at the CIW. A keynote lecture and welcome dinner will be held the preceding afternoon and evening, and lunch and dinner will be provided on the day of the workshop. Presentations may be offered in either Mandarin Chinese or English.
Twelve PhD students from Korea University will make presentations on their research in the fields of modern and classical Chinese literature, history, and linguistics. About twelve PhD students, postdoctoral fellows, and early-careers researchers from Australian and foreign universities will also make presentations. Food and accommodations will be generously provided by Korea University.
The benefits for PhD students include the excellent opportunity for international exchange. Australian students will be encouraged to present their own research in Chinese, a crucial skill for aspiring Sinologists. There will also be ample time for students to meet and exchange ideas with their Korean counterparts, and the possibility for much more deepening of these connections. Korea University offers a number of opportunities for academic exchange, providing office space, and sometimes housing or flights for PhD students working on China-related topics. Many of these exchanges begin through connections established at these conferences.
Professors Zang Dongchion and Choe Yongchul will lead about twelve senior Sinologists to accompany the students on this trip. They will be very interested in meeting with faculty members at the ANU and other Australian universities.
