About the event
Asia is the most populous region in the world, being home to some of the world’s most dynamic, varied and complex societies. The scale and pace of Asia’s transformation is unprecedented the implications for Australia profound. The Australian Government’s White Paper on “Australia in the Asian Century”, published in 2012, argued that fundamental policy and attitudinal changes will be required if Australia were to make the most of the opportunities presented by the Asian century.
This event brings in industry and government representatives to discuss how Australia can deepen our engagement with Asia as we come out of the Covid-19 pandemic and in the midst of geopolitical uncertainties. The event features a presentation of findings from a latest report on on Asian Business in Australia by the University of Sydney Business School and the Commonwealth Bank of Australia.
This event is co-presented by the China Studies Centre, the Sydney Southeast Asia Centre and The University of Sydney Business School.

About the speakers
- Dr Wei Li, The University of Sydney Business School
Wei Li is a Lecturer in International Business at the University of Sydney Business School. Before joining the university, Dr Li worked in corporates in the UK and China. Her current research looks at the globalisation of Chinese enterprises and Chinese economy. She has also published extensively on sustainability and renewable energy in China. She is the recipient of numerous industry research grants, including the recent National Foundation for Australia China Relations 2021-22 Competitive Grant. Dr Li is a regular contributor to public debate on topical issues linked to Chinese outbound investment and Australia China bilateral economic relations.
- Dr. Sandra Alday (Moderator) , The University of Sydney Business School
Sandra Seno-Alday is a Senior Lecturer in International Business. Prior to embarking on an academic career, Sandra was a consultant to a wide range of medium- to large-scale companies, specialising in international business development and organisation development. In the area of international business development, her consulting engagements were mainly aimed at informing clients’ strategic business expansion efforts in Southeast Asia, and included risk assessments, market attractiveness studies, competitive analyses and business feasibility analyses. Sandra is an Executive Member of the Sydney Southeast Asia Centre (SSEAC) at the University of Sydney, and a Guest Editor of the Journal of Risk Research (JRR). She is also the President of the Society for Risk Analysis Australia and New Zealand (SRA ANZ), and a member of the Standards Australia committee on risk management.

- Tim Browne, General Manager – Specialised Industries and Commercial Risk, Commonwealth Bank of Australia
Tim was appointed to the role of General Manager, Specialised Industries and Commercial Risk, Commonwealth Bank of Australia, in mid-2019 where his focus and responsibility is the strategy development and execution for the Business Bank for various industries including, NFP, Schools, Professional Services, Retail, Hospitality, Manufacturing, Working Capital Intensive industries. In this role, Tim also takes carriage of ensuring the Business Banks projects are well executed and that our risk obligations are managed diligently.
- Mukund Narayanamurti, General Manager – ASEAN, Austrade
As the General Manager – ASEAN, Mukund leads the Austrade team across South-East Asia covering eight offices and 100 staff. Previously, Mukund was the CEO of Asialink Business, Australia’s National Centre for Asia Capability, which was established with a mandate from the Australian Government to create an Asia-capable workforce in Australia through the delivery of capability development programs, market insights and advisory services to Australian organisations seeking to navigate Asian markets. Mukund built his experience at KPMG advising on M&A transactions, joint ventures and strategic alliances between Australia and Asia in sectors including energy and resources, banking, agribusiness, education and information technology.
- Greg Bodkin, Senior Vice President, Cochlear
Greg has functional responsibility for new product industrialisation, sourcing & procurement, global manufacturing and logistics. These functions enable the technologies developed in design and development to be supplied as commercial products in Cochlear’s global markets. In addition, he leads the management of Cochlear’s Global Property, facilities and corporate procurement functions. Greg joined Cochlear in 2007 as Head of Supply with 20 years’ prior experience in supply chain management and operations consulting positions, including appointments at Taylor Ceramic Engineering, Warman International Ltd, Weir Minerals PLC and National Australia Bank.
- Elizabeth Ryu, Managing Director, Happytel
Elizabeth holds a Bachelor’s degrees in Economics and Law from UNSW, a MBA from London School of Economics, NYU Stern, & HEC Paris, and is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. She is also admitted as a lawyer in NSW.
Elizabeth is an accomplished entrepreneur with extensive experience in strategic planning, execution, financial management, operations, logistics and digital transformation.
She is currently the Directors of Happytel Retail Group, Active Golf, and other investment and real estate entities.
- Professor Suresh Cuganesan,Deputy Dean (Students and External Partnerships), The University of Sydney Business School
Suresh Cuganesan is Deputy Dean (Students & External Partnerships) and Professor in the Discipline of Strategy, Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the University of Sydney Business School. Suresh specialises in the areas of strategy, organisational design and strategic financial management. He is also passionate about education that is fit-for-purpose and impactful given our changing society and workplace. Suresh’s current research areas investigate: how technology and data innovations impact work and organisations; and, how organisations can achieve better outcomes through being more open, collaborative and transparent.Prior to his academic career, Suresh worked in institutional banking and management consulting. He is also a Fellow of CPA Australia and a member of AICD. More recently, Suresh was CEO of the John Grill Centre for Project Leadership at the University of Sydney.
