Rural life in China is rapidly changing. Recognising the untapped economic potential of rural people and their lands to contribute to economic growth, land, labour and capital are being reorganised – new agricultural entities such as agribusiness, large family farms and cooperatives are replacing smallholders through land transfers to consolidate farmland and scale up holdings. Working together with researchers at China Three Gorges University, Xian Jiaotong University, China Agricultural University and Yunnan University we aim to understand what rural reforms mean for rural life in China. The seminar will also introduce what Dr Wilmsen has identified as key ingredients and challenges for successful long-term collaboration.


About the speaker

Dr Brooke Wilmsen is a Senior Lecturer at La Trobe University’s School of Humanities and Social Sciences. She has a background in Development Studies with a PhD in Geography. She has worked as a resettlement consultant for several international institutions, government affiliates and private consultancies. Her current research focuses on development-forced displacement and resettlement and agrarian change, primarily in China
