Room 318, Education 2 (ED2), La Trobe University, 3086

The Chinese government has committed to three pilot projects to explore the use of casemix funding to improve hospital efficiency. Casemix funding is a method of allocating funds based on the activities hospitals perform, and on the types and number of patients treated. If designed and implemented properly, casemix funding can also strengthen primary care.

In the presentation, Dr. George Liu will review the historical development of the Chinese health system and analyse the underlined reasons for the introduction of casemix funding. Opportunities and challenges in casemix funding in the Chinese context will be discussed.

Dr George Liu is Director and A/Professor of China Health Program at La Trobe University, where he has been teaching health policies and health services management over the past decade. He is Visiting Professor in Sichuan University, Harbin Medical University, and Hubei University of Chinese Medicine, and is currently a board director of the Chinese Health Foundation of Australia.
