The University is seeking an energetic academic to assist the Director of the China Studies Centre in the consolidation of the centre’s status as the leading interdisciplinary centre for the study of China in Australia.
From a central position within the University of Sydney, the centre brings together academics (presently more than 230 members), teachers and researchers from more than a dozen faculties. It aims to forge an innovative and engaged approach to the region that reflects its rich diversity and challenging problems.
As the Deputy Director you will be responsible for:
- the day-to-day management of China Studies Centre, liaising with academics and the University’s professional staff to ensure the delivery of programs
- liaising with the centre’s China manager and the executive director of the University of Sydney China Centre (Suzhou) on China-specific initiatives
- liaising with relevant academic and non-academic units across the University
- overseeing the delivery of the centre’s media and marketing strategy
- conducting quality research in China
- developing and delivering curriculum for intensives and other teaching-related activities as required
- overseeing the development of language and other relevant training programs
- overseeing the planning of research seminars and other research-related events
- collaborating with relevant units within the University to facilitate student mobility to China
- managing the centre’s relationships with community stakeholde
To be successful you will possess:
- a relevant doctoral qualification
- the demonstrated capacity to conduct quality research on China with a strong relevant publication record
- excellent teaching skills and experience teaching about China
- experience in strategic planning, event organising and project management in an academic context
- high level problem solving skills and a proven ability to manage and prioritise a broad range of competing demands
- high level interpersonal skills
- proficiency in the Chinese language.
Desirable for your appointment is:
- having spent time living and/or working in China
- experience in collaborative research
- a demonstrated understanding of the demands of applied research/consultancy
In addition to working in the centre, the successful applicant will be appointed to a relevant University department. The successful candidate will serve as the Deputy Director of the China Studies Centre for a period of five years in the first instance. On completion of that period, and subject to probationary and confirmation requirements, the deputy directorship will be renewed or the position will revert to a standard teaching and research position within the relevant university department.
