Seminar Room A, China in the World Building (188), Fellows Lane, ANU, Canberra

Since Xi Jinping came to power, his foreign policy rhetoric has emphasised ‘win-win cooperation’, ‘shared interests’ and the neighbourhood. But he has also overseen increasing tension in the region as China pursues land reclamation in the South China Sea and defends its claim to sovereignty over the Diaoyu/Senkaku islands. China’s relationship with the US remains complicated, and it is unclear what the September Summit will bring. Xi has put his personal stamp on the ‘One Belt One Road’ policy, and made economic diplomacy the centre of China’s international engagement. Can China win friends, or does Xi have to buy them? What does the future hold for China’s foreign policy and what does it mean for the region and beyond? Kerry Brown will discuss China, Australia and the Wider World with Rebecca Fabrizi, Associate Director of CIW.

Kerry Brown is Professor of Chinese Politics and Director of the China Studies Centre, the University of Sydney. He is the author of 10 books on modern China, the most recent of which are The New Emperors: Power and the Princelings in China and What’s Wrong with Diplomacy: The Case of the UK and China. His study of Xi Jinping and power will be published in January next year.

Rebecca Fabrizi is Associate Director of the Australian Centre on China in the World and responsible for the China Global theme, focusing on China’s foreign policy. Her current research is on China’s relations with the European Union and with Russia. She was formerly a diplomat for the UK and the EU.
